Annual Bethany Beach Breast Cancer Fun Run/Walk

“TAKE A BITE OUT OF CANCER” AT ANNUAL BETHANY BEACH BREAST CANCER FUN RUN/WALK MAY 11

The 11th annual “Bethany Beach Breast Cancer Fun 5K Run/3K Walk” will be held Saturday, May 11th at 9:00 a.m. at the Bethany Beach Bandstand on the boardwalk. The longstanding event, sponsored by Bethany Area Realty owner/broker Ann Raskauskas, raises money to support those fighting breast cancer at Beebe Health Care’s Tunnell Cancer Center.

The theme of the race is different each year, and this year’s is “New York, New York: Take A Bite Out of Cancer!” Raskauskas chose it to honor the life and memory of her close friend and longtime Bethany Beach resident Liz Burke, a native New Yorker who passed away after a courageous battle against the disease. “Liz was a co-founder of the race. She was a fighter who never gave up, never gave in. She personified that ‘New York spirit and attitude’ so necessary as we continue the battle against cancer.”

Participants are urged to come dressed in a favorite New York costume: As a Yankee or Met, a Giant or Jet, a Ranger or Knick, a Rockette, a NYPD or NYFD member, hot dog, piece of pizza or as the Statue of Liberty. Or, choose your own iconic New York costume. There will be prizes for the most original costume for these categories: Team, Individual, Stroller, Wheelchair, and Dog (must be leashed).
Raskauskas said the race “is definitely about the fun and the cause, not the swag. It’s is a low budget, low key race. We award those who enter for their spirit, not their speed. In fact, it’s an untimed event. We love all of our participants and celebrate their spirit and their lives!”

Registration is $25 per adult, and $15 per child 10 years old or younger, with checks payable to Bethany Beach Charities. Pre-registration can be done online at www.bb5krun.com or, mail your completed form to Bethany Area Realty, LLC, 778 Garfield Parkway, Bethany Beach, Delaware 19930. There will also be a day of event sign up table beginning at 7:00 a.m. at the bandstand. Pre-registration ends May 6, with free t-shirts guaranteed to those who pre-register by April 19.

Raskauskas has been raising money for breast cancer research and survivors, as well as collecting donations of food and money for a local food bank, for more than a decade. She began the race when moved by her many friends and family members impacted by breast cancer, and decided she needed to do something proactive. She launched the first annual Bethany Beach Breast Cancer Fun Run in 2009 and has continued it every year since, raising tens of thousands of dollars to help survivors and to help fund cancer research toward finding a cure. Beebe recently broke ground on their South Coastal Health Campus in the Millville area that will include a second cancer center. In addition, Raskauskas has pledged a $50,000 donation for a private infusion room in the new Millville campus. Ms. Raskauskas serves on the board of the Beebe Foundation.
