Dr. Edward Otter presents at The Lewes Historical Society’s October 21 Speaker Series,

“The Wolfe Cemetery on Pasture Neck, Lewes, Delaware”

Lewes, Delaware- October 11, 2016- Join speaker Dr. Edward Otter for a discussion on “The Wolfe Cemetery on Pasture Neck, Lewes, Delaware,” on Friday, October 21, at 7:30pm at the Lewes Public Library at 111 Adams Avenue, Lewes, Delaware 19958.  Admission is free and no reservations are required.

This presentation is The Lewes Historical Society’s October “Speaker Series.” Each month between September and May the Society offers educational and entertaining programs that explore the history of Lewes, the surrounding area, Lewes’s unique interaction in the national scene and other related and appealing topics. Presentation Summary:
In 2014, while a house was being constructed, an unmarked cemetery was discovered.  After the police determined the human remains were not a crime scene the State Historic Preservation Office assumed jurisdiction.  The landowner, with the assistance of Dr. Edward Otter, navigated the legal requirements and obtained permission to remove the cemetery.  In total, there were ten graves, including one in a lead coffin excavated from the site.  Through archival research these were determined to be the remains of members of the Wolfe Family.  Historic research and genealogy provide insights into who these people were.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Edward Otter received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware and graduate degrees in archaeology from Catholic University in Washington D.C. He has been conducting archaeological investigations throughout the Middle Atlantic for over 35 years.  In 1990 he started an archaeological consulting business that today is the largest and oldest firm of its type south of the C&D canal.  Dr. Otter has been involved in a wide variety of archaeological projects including prehistoric camp sites, colonial houses, and burial projects.
