Allen Harim Holds Official Groundbreaking at New $22 Million Hatchery

  DAGSBORO, Del. - Allen Harim, a leading producer and processor of Non Antibiotic Chicken on Delmarva, officially broke ground on Wednesday, October 25, 2017, beginning the construction phase of a new $22 million state-of-the-art hatchery on Delmarva. 10th Annual Turkey Trot Scheduled For Thanksgiving Day

Day Camp Dewey Beach, DE – When the young participants realized they had to reach their hands into the bowl filled with squid specimens, faces changed from mild interest to pure disgust. The two naturalists leading the squid dissection program eagerly encouraged each child to choose a specimen; the dissection was really going to be fun, they assured, but could only continue if they reached into the bowl. Oral History Project at Selbyville Public Library Renewed

A rare gem is held in a quiet area of the Selbyville Public Library’s Delaware Room—oral histories of 22  people with many, sometimes little known, memories  of the special  town of Selbyville (first known as Sandy Branch as early as 1778).  The stories are preserved in a written and audio version and can now be accessed online at the Delaware Heritage Collection of the Digital Collection of the Delaware Library Catalog. Some of the oral history participants include Fred Stevens who revealed in 1987 that he and Ralph Grapperhaus had created the Cypress Swamp Monster in the 1960s; and Raymond Moore, the first and only African-American elected to the Indian River School Board.  Other volunteers told of the variety of businesses which flourished in Selbyville…

OVPD to Hold Bike Checkpoint with Help from Hogs for Heroes

For more than a decade, the Ocean View Police Department has held a bicycle safety checkpoint in the summer. At those checkpoints, cyclists are welcome to stop and have officers inspect their bicycles, as well as receiving free safety items, including a light kit. This year, the checkpoint will be held on Thursday, June 29, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the Taylor Bank parking lot. Hogs for Heroes recently donated $300 to the department to help it purchase bicycle light kits for the checkpoint. Since the program’s start, the department has installed more than 750 lights. The 16-inch barrel was on the USS Missouri when the Japanese surrendered to end World War II in 1945. Delaware Seashore State Park Offers New Nautical Flag Program Thursdays, June 16 - August 18 at 3 p.m. Rehoboth Beach, DE - The International Code of Signals is a system of signals that mariners will use to communicate messages between vessels, typically regarding safety and navigation. The surfmen of the United States Life-Saving Service likely used the code on a regular basis. The first International Code of Signals was drafted in 1855 and consisted of 18 different flags that could communicate up to 70,000 different messages. The code was particularly helpful when language barriers existed between vessels. The International Code of Signals has gone through a number of revisions over the years, but it is still used today. The morning will begin with a tour of the Indian River Life-Saving Station and end with a behind-the-scenes look at the current Indian River Coast Guard Station led by active-duty Coast Guardsmen. The United States Life-Saving Service was established by Congress in 1871 and was used to launch rescue missions to assist victims of shipwrecks along America’s coastlines. Breeches Buoy Museum completes new grant-funded exhibits; to be showcased at Maritime Festival Sunday, July 17 from Noon – 4 p.m. Rehoboth Beach, DE – Delaware Seashore State Park invites the public to the 6th Annual Maritime Heritage Festival at the Indian River Life-Saving Station Museum.  Families will experience the rich history of the Delaware coast through crafts, games, prizes, food, music and demonstrations throughout the day. As part of its ongoing effort to support the community, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Gallo Realty has formed the Gallo Gives Foundation.  First-quarter foundation earnings were awarded to the Cape Henlopen Food Basket and the Lighthouse for Broken Wings, while a portion of earnings has been set aside for a college-bound senior scholarship that will be available in the spring of 2017. Create your own Nautical Flag Art at Delaware Seashore State Park Friday, May 13 at 7 p.m. Rehoboth Beach, DE- The International Code of Signals is a system of signals that mariners will use to communicate messages between vessels, typically regarding safety and navigation.  The surfmen of the United States Life-Saving Service likely used the code on a regular basis.  The first International Code of Signals was drafted in 1855 and consisted of 18 different flags that could communicate up to 70,000 different messages.  The code was particularly helpful when language barriers existed between vessels. Lecture/tours of the hull of the DeBraak, a shipwrecked 18th-century British warship, to return to Lewes, Del. beginning on June 1, 2015

Beginning on June 1, 2015, the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs will again offer public lecture/tours of the hull of His Majesty’s Sloop DeBraak, a British warship that was escorting and protecting a convoy of British and American merchant ships en route to the United States when it was capsized and lost off the Delaware coast on May 25, 1798. Lecture/tours will take place at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the following Mondays during 2015: June 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29; July 6, 13, 20 and 27; Aug. 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31; and Sept. 14, 21 and 28. Collaborative coastal grass-planting effort to help Indian River Inlet dune in future storms

Grass planting by DOC VOP laborers at the Indian River Inlet LEWES (April 18, 2013) – A coastal grass planting effort capitalizing on Department of Correction’s VOP (violation of probation) laborers and privately-donated resources will help DNREC’s Division of Watershed Stewardship bolster the north side of the Indian River Inlet against lost or displaced sand from future weather events. A Sussex County farmer, William Wolter, Jr., donated several truckloads of established panic grass through DNREC’s Office of Community Services, and DOC Sussex Community Correction Center VOP laborers overseen by DNREC’s Shoreline & Waterway Management Section planted it at the Inlet earlier this month. The VOP laborers also loaded the grass from Mr. Wolter’s Owens Station farm and hunting preserve near Greenwood and transported it to the planting site.
